Reflection and Relationships

reflection

Maybe it is having a granddaughter who is now 1 year old and aging as I type this. Possibly because our youngest is 20 and life continues to move at an incredible pace. Or maybe it is just reflection as we enter into another year. Whatever the cause it is all good to get me to simply stop and reflect.

slow down

I believe my lesson for today has been to slow down. God seems to keep putting into my path people and things that require me to put on the brakes.

At work I had to print and assemble invitations to an event. If you want plenty of time to think, hand-feed invitations one-by-one into a printer then stuff each one into an envelope and seal them. I think I solved the problem of the government shutdown while standing there.

rio-high-lining

The other day I was watching a news report on people walking tight ropes up on high cliffs over Rio de Janeiro. My palms were sweaty just watching them. They are extreme adrenaline junkies who love the high they get from doing this. They have become very accomplished and knowledgeable about how to do it safely. They did say they learned a lot from trial and error. Obviously, the error wasn’t too tragic.

And then, I noticed the safety leash attached to their ankle and the rope.

What's the plan

I’m on a plane heading to meetings that have a side benefit of being near two of our children and our daughter-in-law. So needless to say, I’m looking forward to seeing my kids – especially since they live 2200 miles from us.

The hardest part of being a parent of adult children is when they are called to live far away from you. Which reminds me of why we raised our children the way we did….so they would grow up, move out, and become independent, productive adults. Ironic, isn’t it?

Unfortunately, when our children are little, sometimes the best goal we can come up with is getting through the day without anyone hurting themselves or us losing our minds. Parenting is a very stressful and complex job. You have little ones that are completely dependent on you for everything – home, clothing, food, transportation, etc. And most of the time, your “plans” do not always go smoothly. Someone gets hurt or sick or the car breaks down or….. You fill in the blank.  Life is full of interruptions that just make parenting that more challenging.

Repost: True Friendships

Like so many I try to find a place away from the office for study, planning, writing blogs like this, etc. I have a few spots I have found that are wonderful for me, but that is for another blog.

One time where I was sitting there was a group of retired men sitting around enjoying a drink and having conversation. They were close to me so guess I was eavesdropping, but anyone within 20 feet of them could easily hear these guys. They were having a great time.
