What's the plan

I’m on a plane heading to meetings that have a side benefit of being near two of our children and our daughter-in-law. So needless to say, I’m looking forward to seeing my kids – especially since they live 2200 miles from us.

The hardest part of being a parent of adult children is when they are called to live far away from you. Which reminds me of why we raised our children the way we did….so they would grow up, move out, and become independent, productive adults. Ironic, isn’t it?

Unfortunately, when our children are little, sometimes the best goal we can come up with is getting through the day without anyone hurting themselves or us losing our minds. Parenting is a very stressful and complex job. You have little ones that are completely dependent on you for everything – home, clothing, food, transportation, etc. And most of the time, your “plans” do not always go smoothly. Someone gets hurt or sick or the car breaks down or….. You fill in the blank.  Life is full of interruptions that just make parenting that more challenging.

Repost: True Friendships

Like so many I try to find a place away from the office for study, planning, writing blogs like this, etc. I have a few spots I have found that are wonderful for me, but that is for another blog.

One time where I was sitting there was a group of retired men sitting around enjoying a drink and having conversation. They were close to me so guess I was eavesdropping, but anyone within 20 feet of them could easily hear these guys. They were having a great time.

Repost: Grace Under Fire

I’m sitting here with a box of Kleenex on one side and a pile of wadded tissues on the other. (Yes, I will disinfect my keyboard when I’m through.) My dear, sweet, generous husband gave me his cold.

Lying here in the middle of the night, unable to breathe or sleep, I began wondering what kind of wife I am when I’m sick.

None of us like adversity – whether it is a cold, or something as simple as a broken electronic, or as devastating as a hurricane or cancer. We would just as soon take a pass on any troubles – small or large. But right now we live in a broken world, so troubles are a part of our daily lives.

Repost: Traditions

Dec 2, 2014 by

Now I absolutely love traditions, especially when it comes to Christmas time. They help us to share moments together with our families, live out life together, and give us memories of those special times with special people. Traditions are such connecting, memory-making, and relationship-building times.

Traditions give us something to hang on to, give us those spaces and places to laugh, love, and live together as God designed and desires. Traditions give us those occasions and events to remember those closest to us, as well as, those in our past with whom we shared life. And helps us tie generations together relationally.

Who do you need to thank?

Nov 24, 2014 by

thank you

It’s the week – Thanksgiving!!! We love this time of year – cool weather, endless football, and family. And to top it all off, we get to eat all the carbs our hearts desire (or dread) for a whole day.

So with the craziness of cooking, travel, and Uncle Bob’s bad jokes, we all need to take a few moments to reflect and be thankful.

There are so many things to thank our Lord for, but we’re going to focus on relationships.

Communicating Needs

meeting needs

Recently Jerolyn and I were driving home from Tahoe area. We live in Sacramento so we are relatively close to Tahoe, but it is a significant elevation and climate change.

When we headed home, it was quite cool in Tahoe but sunny. We hopped in the van, and I had on a windbreaker. Knowing my warm body temperature I should have taken off the windbreaker but thought it was cool enough to leave on as we headed out. Jerolyn is a bit more cold natured than me, so she was bundled up a little bit more.

As we started down the mountain, the temperature began to warm along with the sun shining into our vehicle. I began to get warm, so I opened the window to try to cool a bit before attempting to take off the windbreaker. Jerolyn was still cold so she turned up the heat on her side in the van. The higher she cranked the heat, the hotter I became and the more I opened my window. The more I opened the window, the colder she got and the higher she turned the temp and the blower. You get the picture. We were not trying to freeze or burn the other one out; it was just the way it was based on our body temps.
