Intentional Parenting

Recently, Jerolyn and I were privileged to teach and lead a parenting conference in Texas. Here is some of what was said by those who attended…

“We must be intentional parents if we hope to leave our children a legacy of Christian values that they take with them as they grow and start their own families.”

“One of the things we liked was the emphasis on discipleship, and we think we will be much more intentional about living a legacy for our children to follow.”

“After our discussion, both (of our children) were excited about creating a poster with “our family values” and could not wait to pick out a prominent wall on which to display them!  This in itself is an exciting development and one that got (my wife) and I motivated to ensure we continue to model the values to our children.”

Did you catch that more than one person mentioned the intentionality of parenting and having a plan. We love it.

Praying With Your Children…not just for them

This week our son, Shay, once again had shoulder surgery. The first shoulder surgery, a few years ago, did not correct the problem. We are praying this one works as the doctor indicated clearly there were still problems from when Shay tore his labrum.

His mom was able to be with him and assist as needed since they are living in the area, and Haley, his wife, is out of the country.

I was privileged to simply pray with Shay before he left the house. He is still and always will be “my boy” no matter how old and big and strong he gets. It reminded me again of this privilege of not only being a parent but also praying over and with our kids.

Maybe this is just for me, but I would invite you to lean over my shoulder and listen in to the lesson I was reminded again of praying with and for our kids:

young people with children

We talk a lot about ways to raise your children – establishing a vision for your family – establishing a list of values – training your children in these values – modeling the values for your children, etc. But today is about the most important action you can take to help your children grow into the healthy, loving, productive adults we all want them to be.

Sometimes you resort to this activity when you are at your wits end and have no idea what else to do. But this is something you should be doing at least once a day for your child.

Do You Know Your Child?

This morning I’m taking care of my precious 9-month-old granddaughter, Addi, for a few hours. When her mommy dropped her off, she said she would be ready to go down for a nap any time. So after a little crawling around and exploring, I did what I always do when I put her down. Get her favorite blanket, cradle her in my arms, and rock/bounce/jostle and sing till she relaxes and I can lay her in the bed. No problem.

Till today.

Leadership Lesson for Parents

Parents Reading to Laughing Boy

4 things Every Parent, Every Leader Must “Be”:

We often say that if you don’t win at home you really don’t win anywhere else. We believe this is certainly true. Oh you and I may be successful by the world’s definition, but we believe it isn’t about success it is about significance.

In having opportunities over the years to lead organizations, teams, events, etc. we believe that we must lead well as parents at home. This leadership lesson can easily be applied to leaders but we think as parents this is where it needs to begin. Lead well at home. As you do this, we are convinced you will lead well in other arenas of your life, career, and calling. It starts at home!
