We are so happy to have our friend, Randy Tindall, guest blog for us this week. He has such a heart for family. We think you will hear that loud and clear in this blog on marriage. ~ Jim and Jerolyn

“Marriage is work” was some sage advice given to me when I announced my engagement to Emily. Immediately everyone knew Emily was special and I was most fortunate. Having waited so long to find the lady of my heart, I was willing to work at having a successful marriage. So like any good guy, off to work I went.

Reality brought work to a screeching halt! That old proverb, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” is also true of marriage. Yes, you do have to work at marriage, but you also have to play. Every marriage needs a rhythm of work and play. You noticed I didn’t say balance. Work/play balance means there really is not movement. Work and play both require movement; and movement requires rhythm. The work/play rhythm of marriage is much like the rhythm of dance.

For the last few months I have been wrestling with a question. You see, I have 2 friends who have faced adversity in opposite ways.

One came out of a difficult childhood living in a poor country. She got herself and her daughter to the US. She has got a wonderful job with a lot of responsibility, bought a home and this fall is starting to work on her college degree. She made a life for herself.

My other friend, however, who also came from a difficult upbringing made very different choices. He is currently in jail facing a possible second prison sentence.

My question is, “Why do some people have a fire in their belly that pulls them up out of difficult circumstances and some people don’t?”

The other day I was reading an article on Inc.com called ‘My Wife Knows I’m Crazy and She Lives With It’ by Meg Cadoux Hirshberg. The story is about an entrepreneur who has a problem with almost never turning off his work brain. Get this, on the day of his wedding rehearsal, he was meeting with distributers. His fiancé didn’t see him until 4:00 p.m. that day. Fortunately, he married a very understanding woman and one who must love him a great deal.

How often has your job gotten in the way of your marriage? Or a better question may be how often have we allowed our job to get in the way of our marriage?
