Communicating Needs

Recently Jerolyn and I were driving home from Tahoe area. We live in Sacramento so we are relatively close to Tahoe, but it is a significant elevation and climate change.

When we headed home, it was quite cool in Tahoe but sunny. We hopped in the van, and I had on a windbreaker. Knowing my warm body temperature I should have taken off the windbreaker but thought it was cool enough to leave on as we headed out. Jerolyn is a bit more cold natured than me, so she was bundled up a little bit more.

As we started down the mountain, the temperature began to warm along with the sun shining into our vehicle. I began to get warm, so I opened the window to try to cool a bit before attempting to take off the windbreaker. Jerolyn was still cold so she turned up the heat on her side in the van. The higher she cranked the heat, the hotter I became and the more I opened my window. The more I opened the window, the colder she got and the higher she turned the temp and the blower. You get the picture. We were not trying to freeze or burn the other one out; it was just the way it was based on our body temps.

A Forever Love

For wherever you go, I will go;
And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;
Your people shall be my people,
And your God, my God.
Where you die, I will die,
And there will I be buried.
The Lord do so to me, and more also,
If anything but death parts you and me.

You may have heard these lines recited at a wedding. They actually come from the Bible in the book of Ruth and are spoken from a recently widowed daughter-in-law to her mother-in-law. But they capture the true attitude of covenant and are perfect words for a wedding ceremony between a man and woman beginning their life together.

Why is it that so many in our society today cannot fathom the idea of a forever relationship? That’s a rhetorical question because I actually already know the answer. Do you?

A True Covenant Marriage

duggar wedding

Yesterday, Good Morning America covered the wedding of Jill Duggar from 19 Kids and Counting. They captioned it with “Jill and Derick’s Covenant Marriage.” The report explained that a covenant marriage is one where they promise that if divorce is being considered, they will seek counseling first and also puts some strict parameters on when divorce is allowed.

Well, I don’t believe GMA got the whole gist of a covenant marriage.

How to Measure Your Marriage

Oct 16, 2014 by

couple on date

I was recently reading an article on using business metrics in your marriage to gauge how you are doing in your relationship. While it doesn’t sound very romantic or have very many warm fuzzies, the idea has merit. After all, if we are wanting to accomplish something, i.e. a healthy, vibrant marital relationship, then how do we know we are heading that way if we don’t have some measurable dashboards along the way.

How to Protect Your Marriage

Oct 6, 2014 by

couple talking 2

Recently, I had a wonderful afternoon with a former college classmate. We reminisced and caught up on many of our friends who now live all across the United States. One theme that kept coming up in our conversation was the number of divorces among our friends – many of them in ministry. My heart was once again broken. Broken by the lost families. Broken by the lost legacies. Broken by the pain of brokenness.

So how do we protect our marriage from the same tragic end?
