Perspective

Recently, as the newbie at work, I was given the illustrious job of decorating the Christmas tree. One comment that my co-workers kept making was that they noticed I would step back from the tree every once in a while and take a look at what I’d done before placing another ornament. They seemed to think that was unusual.

I was simply doing what my mom had taught me to do. She was always meticulous about our Christmas decorations. Of course, you can’t group together too many ornaments of the same color. And heaven forbid there are any empty spaces. Old habits die hard. Stepping away from the tree helped me see the color spacing and the blank spots I needed to fill.

As we have just celebrated the amazing Holy Day of Christmas, maybe we need to take some time to step away and gain a new perspective. It’s time to look at the colors from a new angle; to view the empty spaces for what is missing or maybe even to create some empty spaces.

There are so many things in our lives that can skew our vision:

  • Busyness
  • Pain
  • Clutter
  • Expectations
  • Work
  • Responsibilities
  • Relationships
  • Even joyful events

Stepping back for a time allows us to do two things:

  1. Check our life for balance, and
  2. Look for what’s missing.

Getting bogged down in minutia can cloud anyone’s vision – even in the fun and joyful details of Christmas. But we must never forget to take a look at the bigger picture once in a while and gain a clearer perspective.

What do you need to see more clearly?
