There’s Only Two Things a Parent Can Do

I had lunch with a friend today whose son is on an around the world trip and has been for the last year. He’s 19 years old. She was telling about the wonderful adventures he has had and some of the pictures she has seen of him. Like him hanging onto the side of a cliff face. Or using couchsurfing.com to find a place to sleep for the night. I finally said, “Can you imagine how you would feel as a mother if he didn’t know the Lord and was out doing all that?”

You see, there are many things from which we can protect our children. We can control their TV watching, what friends they hangout with, the food they eat and the time they go to bed. But even that is not perfect. Short of locking them in a bubble, we cannot protect them from everything.

We have only two options: Do what we can in establishing a solid, loving foundation and trust God. That’s it.

Lean On Me

The old song goes Lean On Me when you need a friend. It is so true for all of us. If we are still breathing, we need one another. It really is all about relationships. In this video a tortoise is on its back, ever been there? How many times in our lives have we been there? Many times…all of us. But as the video continues there is a second tortoise that comes along and helps.

We are not intended to do life by ourselves. In fact the philosopher, and considered the wisest man ever, Solomon says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help him or her up.”

Some days we are like the tortoise on his back and in need of someone to come along and help. Some days we need to be like the tortoise who comes along and sticks out his snout to help turn our friend back upright and nudge them along on the right path.2tortoises2

Watch this video.

  • Which tortoise are you more like today?
  • How can you come alongside a friend and be a friend to help?
  • Who do you need to contact and know they will come help you get back upright and on your way in this journey of life?
